Body

Description/Background:

Utah Renewable Communities is a coalition of 18 communities that have partnered with Rocky Mountain Power to design a new renewable energy program. The URC Program aims to offer customers a choice to supplement their current energy mix with renewable energy.

In 2019, the Council was presented with an opportunity to enroll in the Community Renewable Energy Act, and heard presentations from the Salt Lake City Sustainability Department as well as Rocky Mountain Power. Ultimately, the Council did not vote to enroll in the program and the deadline to indicate intent to participate passed. During the most recent Legislative Session, SB 214 S1 made changes to the Community Renewable Energy Act, removing the requirement that a municipality or county adopt a resolution no later than Dec. 31, 2019, stating their intent to set a net-100% renewable energy goal. This change presents the opportunity for new municipalities to join the program.

Council Member Dekeyzer is bringing this presentation forward to review changes made to the Community Renewable Energy Act and garner Council feedback on Sandy City's possible enrollment to the program.
