Agenda Item Title:
Title
Council Member Robinson requesting the Council consider the creation of a Communications and Public Engagement Coordinator within the City Council Office.
Body
Presenter:
Council Member Robinson
Body
Description/Background:
The City Council has been increasingly focused on constituent outreach utilizing tools such as "town hall" meetings, video, social media, and live web streaming. These strategies provide a valuable link between residents and elected officials. The City Council Office and Communications staff has been valuable in coordinating these efforts. However, these duties are extracurricular and cannot be a focal point for existing staff. Given the Council's interest in increased communication, the state of digital media, and the responsibilities of existing staff, the Council should consider adding a full-time communications position to the Council Office. Other cities with our form of government including Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Provo have council office communications on which this new position could be modeled.
Fiscal Impact:
Initial estimate of the ongoing cost for salary and benefits using comparable positions is in the range of $70,000 to $100,000. There would also be minor one-time costs for equipment.
Further action to be taken:
Council Member Robinson to work with staff to finalize position parameters and identify a funding plan.
Recommended Action and/or Suggested Motion:
Recommendation
Motion to direct further development of City Council Communications and Public Engagement Coordinator position specifications and funding plan.
