Body

Description/Background:

This proposal was originally presented to the Council during the June 4, 2024 City Council Meeting.

During the 2024 General Session,  the Legislature passed amendments to Utah Code related to Local Option Sales and Use Taxes for Transportation. The amendments grant the governing body of Salt Lake County (the Salt Lake County Council) the option to impose an additional 0.2% sales and use tax within the County. From the 0.2% tax,  0.05% would be administered to municipalities within the County, 0.05% would be administered to the County to use for transportation or public safety purposes, and the final 0.10% would be dedicated to transit, or after three years, to the transit innovation fund, operated by the Utah Department of Transportation. This tax is specifically designed to fund improvements to highways and public transit systems.

The Salt Lake County Council must enact an ordinance in order to impose the Local Tax. As a motion of support for the County Council to enact such an ordinance, the administration is presenting a proposed resolution, for Council consideration, that expresses Sandy City's support and desire for the County Council to adopt the local tax in order to generate more funding to bolster local transportation options and infrastructure.
