Title

City Council discussing the process and timeline surrounding redistricting

Body

Presenter:

Dustin Fratto, Council Interim Executive Director

Body

Description/Background:

On February 8, 2022 the Council received a presentation from the City Attorney regarding the legal requirements and deadlines surround the redistricting process.  During this presentation the council discussed their initial thoughts on the process and tasked staff to review their discussion and to begin working on a suggested timeline (Exhibit A) as well as a baseline map (Exhibit B).  Tonight we are recommending that the council (1) review the attached suggested timeline, discuss, and make amendments as desired, (2) review the attached initial baseline map (this map shows current boundaries with estimated current population), discuss, and then give formal direction to staff concerning any new maps the council would like to be presented with during a future meeting.

Further action to be taken:

The Council will be presented with any additional maps that the body requests. Following any public process, the council must adopt a map prior to the statutory May 10, 2022 deadline.

Recommended Action and/or Suggested Motion:

Recommendation

Tonight staff is looking for formal direction from the Council concerning both the timeline and any baseline maps that the council body would like completed for their review and consideration Some suggested motions would be:

1. Motion directing staff to move forward with the attached timeline as proposed (OR as amended, noting the specific changes).

2. Motion directing staff to prepare for council review maps that include the following: (Example: 2 maps with 4 districts each, 2 maps with 5 districts each, 2 maps with 7 districts each, etc.)
