Body

Description/Background:

This item will commence with a short video clip aimed at giving all meeting participants and attendees a basic explanation of the ranked choice voting (RCV) process. Following the video clip, Mr. Lockhart will provide the Council with a presentation RCV.  The Council will then hold a discussion on RCV.  The staff and presenters listed above will be available for questions.

Fiscal Impact:

Depending on whether the Council decides to pursue RCV and which political subdivision of the State administers our elections this item had the potential to either increase or decrease the cost of Sandy elections.

Further action to be taken:

Tonight the Council should provide some direction to staff on how to move forward. Does the Council need more information? Are there questions that have yet to be answered? Should the Council decide that they'd like to participate in RCV, a resolution will need to be adopted during the April 20, 2021 meeting. As this is the first reading of this tiem, Council Member Sharkey would like direction from the Council on whether to bring the item back for a second reading and possible adoption.

Recommended Action and/or Suggested Motion:

Recommendation

Motion to advance the attached draft resolution on Ranked Choice Voting forward for a second reading and possible adoption at the next business session.
