Description/Background:
The Metro Gang Unit is a partnership of several valley wide agencies created to combat gang activity and their associated criminal activities such as homicide, drive by shootings, drug trafficking, burglaries, aggravated assaults, and vandalism.
The current make up of the metro gang unit encompasses officers from Unified Police Department, West Jordan Police Department, West Valley Police Department, Taylorsville Police Department, Saratoga Springs Police Department, Juvenile Justice Services, Utah Department of Corrections, Adult Probation and Parole, Law Enforcement Bureau, Department of Public Safety State Bureau of Investigations, United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah, and the United States Marshals Service.
Historically, Sandy has been a participant in the Metro Gang Unit but has not had a full-time investigator assigned to the unit due to staffing concerns. Based on the uptick in gang related activity in Sandy City, Sandy City Police approached the Metro Gang Unit about supplying a full-time investigator back to the unit. This was met with excitement and appreciation as gang problems are growing and each agency recognizes the benefit from the work from the Gang Project to contain gang activity by investigating and arresting gang members before further crimes are committed in their communities.
The Sandy City Police Department will enter into a Interlocal Cooperation Agreement with the Metro Gang Unit. We will supply one full-time Gang Detective to the unit. This Detective will come from the Police Department’s current staffing and will not re...
