Description/Background:

In August of 2018 the City Council adopted a short term rental ordinance which placed a cap on the total number of STR permits for each of the 30 communities within Sandy City.  The cap was initially created with the goal that there would be enough permits to accommodate those STR's that were, at the time, operating illegally.  The initial recommendation was a citywide cap, however, the Council wanted to exert more precise control.  It decided that a geographic cap, using the existing 30 communities within the City, would be more precise and more effective at the community level.  This has proven to be true.  While the City has issued nowhere near the maximum number of permits Citywide, there are two communities that have reached their individual caps.

Further action to be taken:

The Community Development Department will update the cap for each community on a biennial basis.  The first update, should occur sometime in late 2020.
